Sounds similar to the problem I am experiencing: http://www.ogre3d.org/addonforums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=9217. are you running in release or debug mode? Can you run a debug trace and see if it is failing in the same location?

I am also using ogre 1.6.1 with latest svn code.
