I'm done.

I've decided to stop work on NxOgre, or at best work on it now and again.

I don't find it enjoyable anymore, and it's become more of a chore that I have to do once or twice a week. I don't use it for any of my programming projects, in fact NxOgre is my sole programming project. Originally, NxOgre was going to be this few files of code for this GTA clone I was working on. But six years later, it's a massive library with code size that almost half the size of Ogre.

Once the final bits of the Character Controller in Critter are done, I'm declaring BuggySwires as stable. I'd appreciate those people who interest could help me a long a little; patches would be welcome. After that, I won't be writing any further features, but I will happily accept any bug fixes or missing function patches from anyone. But just because there is no more development, it doesn't mean that NxOgre is no longer useful, PhysX hasn't been updated in over a year, so NxOgre will continue to run for a good few years now.

NxOgre has been a big thing in my life for the last six years. It's cost me a fortune to keep the server and website running, and taken a large chunk of my free time. I want to stop now, and do something else. For those who follow my other work; I will continue with Gorilla 2.0.

Best Wishes,

Robin aka "betajaen"

An understandable, yet sad step. You've put in a lot of time and effort to create this good library and I am sure all of us here are grateful for that.

All the best with Gorilla! May it finally find its way into the official Ogre code base!

Yep.

NxOgre is pretty much complete as it is. Like I said, PhysX hasn't been updated for a long time. The only non-PhysX features I wanted to add was serialisation but that would have to be very generic in it's implementation.

But I'm still in charge, I'll accept patches for bug fixes and missing functions. But no more adding of features - unless some clever chap wrote a serialisation framework for me. ;)

NxOgre was one of big thing in my programming life. Totally addicted. indeed sad to hear that it has been stopped  , but totally understandable.

And I really grateful for your help betajaen. Thank you, thank you very much.

Wish you very good luck with your rest of the projects and other part of life.

Mine too. The biggest project I've ever done.

But cheers mate.

One thing,
I have been in this forum for nearly two years, and saw your location changed multiple times.
if one day you visit sri lanka, note that I am here to give a warm welcome!

Thanks for working on this for so long.

Thank You a lot for NxOgre. For me this is the most complete and designed wrapper between physic engine and Ogre.
About your GTA ( grand theft auto ? ) clone project I would like to say that it could be nice idea but It's too much of work for one person...

Thanks!

I gave up on it years ago. I've been playing with a better game idea for almost a year now, I may start developing it properly now. But I want to do Gorilla first.

Oh that's nice... Give us news about your progression :)

I perfectly understand your choice.
I'm very attached to this library and the way it was developed, so I'm quite sad...
I was curious of an implementation of soft bodies....
But Nxogre is a huge library, and I've just learned in your post that his size is almost half of Ogre one.

Will you keep visiting this forum to support other users of PhysX ?
And what about tutorials ?

Have heart Betajaen.

I read these forums once or twice a day. Usually I answer most posts.

So I'm not completely stopped, I just won't be adding anything new to NxOgre.

Wow, sad times indeed. I understand that it has become more of a chore for you now, so it's extremely reasonable for you to want to stop developing it. You've done a fantastic job from what I've seen, and I'm very grateful for all the help you've given me over the past year.

I'm sticking around to continue developing Snoogre even after my project hand-in date (May 6th!), so no doubt I'll have a peak at Gorilla every so often to see how things are faring for you there.

Thanks Betajaen :)

NxOgre was a great help when I started using Ogre. Thank you. :)

Well, there's a bright side to this, with NxOgre soon being declared stable and finished, new tutorials can be written that won't be declared depreciated for a long time! NxOgre is an incredibly useful project, and I'm thankful that you've put so much work into it betajaen!

Well this is a blow to the Ogre community. Physics is a fundamental component of a development package. Newbies are going to gravitate toward solutions with a minimum of fuss. They're not going to want to jury rig an old solution thats no longer being actively worked on. I sincerely hope we can find somebody to pick up the slack and possibly even take it to new directions but I dunno, I'm certainly no where near experienced enough and I don't know of anyone with the know how and speed available to take betajean's place.

Maybe some sort of team could come together to distribute the burden, so that one person leaving won't stop the whole project. Maybe with a team in place, betajean can return every now and then like that guy for the overall Ogre project. Perhaps a big problem is that NxOgre isn't popular enough to be selfsustaining. Its sad but it'd look weird if I tapped the shoulder of the guy I'm in line with at the grocery store or the starbucks barista and said 'Hey, if you're ever looking for a physics connector library for your games you oughta try out this SDK called Nxogre."

No this will give us a chance to modify NxOgre the way we need it now that there won't be any more major changes to it.

Spacegaier has access to the repository now. If you want things in NxOgre, you can always bug him with patches. ;)

betajaen do you intend to finish the Charactor controller in BuggySwires as you said you where going too so it becomes a stable release.

Thanks

But I don't really have the time to finish it now. But as your one of a few people who understand it, you can finish it for me if you like. I'll put in any changes you seem fit.

Well, theoretically for now. You first will have to help me get going with your special scripts (if there is no way around them) :D .

betajaen

Yep, of course.

jarwulf

26-05-2011 02:34:26

yeah why doesn't spacegaier take over...and recruit whoever he knows to be the 'nxogre team'. Betajean can stay on as the old gramps who occasionally pops in to help and I'll tell everyone (who I think will care) about the wonderful nxogre library.

spacegaier

26-05-2011 14:54:41

Well, what I can do is take the burden of handling patches and stuff from betajaen, but there is no way that I can develop NxOgre any further (not sure if there even would be a need for that anyway), since I a simply lacking the physics skills.

Also quite some time gets eaten by Ogitor development and internal Ogre mod stuff, but taking a patching/administrative role might be an option.

betajaen

26-05-2011 15:07:59

Spacegaier,

If you want to have an administrative role, accept patches, or generally be another me. Your more than welcome. I wouldn't expect you to continue programming NxOgre, or try to learn it. You have enough on your plate as it is.
