Starting up MOgre

Well, it compiled clean!! woot!

When I followed directions to start from within Visual Studio.
the command line window with all the items that are going on are seen.
get the windows pop-up to select dx or ogl. then black screen.

starting the first demo solution files work fine from the bin directory by double clicking, the physics ones give same blank screen.

is there a log file somewhere I can look at or does someone know by my description what I messed up/forgot.

There should be an "Ogre.log" file in the bin directory, post its contents so we can take a look at it..

This does not happen when running from the bin directory manually
only from within Visual Studio. The newt demo doesn't run either way.
I did not run that and post that log file. (I figure one at a time was a good start). If you want it let me know.

Did you get "Newton.dll" for the physics demos ? If not download the Newton SDK and copy Newton.dll in the bin folders.

To run a sample from visual studio, what values did you put on "Start external program" and "working directory" ?
