Ogre3D is an Open-source (object-oriented) Graphic Rendering Engine. It only does graphic rendering.

So you can build a game with the graphic rendering part done by Ogre and you could also build a game engine using Ogre for the graphic rendering part. It's also used in non-games like simulations or visual interractive stuffs in museums and expos.

There are some game engines (like NeoAxis) which use it, and there are some games which use it too (like Torchlight).

Ogre3D, as said, is a graphical rendering engine. You can display 'things' on a screen AKA window.

Most people would think about it as it is used for games and the second thought is simulations, as Klaim mentioned. But it has a much broader field, actually if you think you could use it for something, that would be te use of Ogre3D. Since Windows Vista the screen you are looking at is a 3D environment but you don't notice that as it is set as looking like 2D.

- if you have a soffisticated graph or table with too much entries you can make it to have a 3D interface, saving you some space on screen and giving you a neat lay out.
- a doctor needs to have a graphical rendering engine for scans of your guts.
- real pilots fly in a simulator too
- A realtor can make use of it too as they can make a 3d model of a house -> personally I would like to see normal pictures
- hence the lines and striped the (old) windowsmedia player when playing music, you can make it 3D with Ogre too, flying the user around in a void of neatness 8)
- do not forget the 3D modelling/animations programs we use to create our environment

- and so on

You can even create MS Word or Excell with it where you create a 3D environment to portrait all tabs, documents and groups of whatever so a user 'could have' a more organised feeling as you put 'this'in that corner and 'that' on the other side. Or you can create a movie player where you put all movies in the good old filmrollcans on a shelve, clicking it would start playing.

Ogre3D is whatever you whish it to be as long as it is graphical.

As it is only the graphical side of an application, you would propably need other libraries too, such as a audio rendering engine, movie encoders and/or whatever else you need.

Err... you've been on the forum for a year and last november said you had a team working on a game using ogre, but are only just now asking what ogre actually is?
