As part of the MyFirstPlanet program I'm making I needed a plugin for generating space backgrounds. After creating the actual plugin I decided to make this tool to get some experience using Nokia's Qt UI framework. Go easy on me, this is the first Ogre tool that I've released and it's definitely an alpha release.

Create seamless skybox textures with nebulas and stars!

    - Layer based system
    - 3 layer types: Point Stars, Billboard Stars and Noise (for nebulas)
    - Point and Billboard stars can be masked so they appear inside nebulas or just cluster in general
    - UI uses the Spacescape Ogre plugin, which I'll be releasing later, but it allows you to put this spacescape generator ability in your own Ogre app.
    - Will all be opensourced under MIT license eventually (not sure where to host the source code will be hosted on Sourceforge)
    - Windows and *NEW* Mac builds available.

I tried downloading it 4 times with 2 different browsers and it always gives me a damaged zip file!! Seems really cool anyway, congrats!

With an atmospheric shader I wrote applied to an inverted sphere (normals facing in)
The atmosphere is part of the planet scene manager plugin that will be available in the near future. It's not for big planets, just small ones like this one.

I'm sorry you were unable to download the file - I tried downloading it myself and had no problems :( Maybe when I get it hosted on sourceforge or google code you will be able to download it without this issue.

Thanks! I do want to host the source in a place where most other Ogre plugins / tools live if possible, but I haven't done a lot of looking into that yet.

Well, now i tried it in two different computers and the file keeps arriving corrupted :S This really looks cool, i would love to give it a try.. What zip software are you using? I tried the windows 7 built-in one and winRAR, both giving me the corrupted file error.

The screen shots look impressive, congrats.

The program opens and I can create layers/see the results. But when I try to open an included 'save' like green-nebula-stars.xml the program crashes with a 'run time error' (no useful debug info).

Can you PM me the contents of your Spacescape/app/win/app.log file? It's the Ogre text based log file.

Also, can you save files and then open them?

I just started a sourceforge project for Spacescape and will be uploading the source soon.

I just had a first glimpse at your tool and first of all: It runs ;) !

After just some seconds of toying around, there are two things that you should add:
- when loading an saved nebula, a progress bar would be nice
- color preview: so when you are in one of the color choosing dialogs and the user drags around the color selection cursor, immediately update the nebula, so that the users sees what the changes will look like

Apart from these two points: A very good first impression!

Thanks! And, no I don't think your card is too old. There is a bug that I have fixed that caused this error on non-NVidia cards. Please try the latest version and see if it fixes the crash for you. https://sourceforge.net/projects/spacescape/files/

Unfortunately, there is still an issue with ATI cards it seems where there are some artifacts on noise layers. Still working on a fix for that.

Yes - the crash is fixed.

Two new issues :

1 - See the screenshot below of the file "overlapping-point-stars.xml". Is this the bug on ATI card you mention?
2- The app will freeze when I try to load "purple-nebula.xml". Below is the log which is similar for the 3 .xml examples. If you need the complete log pm me.

Note that my ati x300 only support shader 2.0.

Oh noes! The error in the log files indicate that the fragment shader could not run on your graphics card. It might be that the noise shader is too complex. Your errors are not the ATI issues I've been made aware of, they appear to be from the hardware not supporting the GPU noise shader. The freezing issue with the purple nebula xml file is probably a mix of the noise shader issue and the complexity of that file. Unfortunately, my CPU version of the noise had seams in the skybox, which is why I switched to GPU per pixel noise with render to texture instead. I guess I will need to do some more error checking in the material creator code so it lets the user know when there is an error of this sort.

I don't have an ATI platform to test on yet, but the source code is on sourceforge if you want to try messing with the GLSL shader to simplify it. You should be able to compile the plugin only and not worry about recompiling the actual Qt GUI.

I also just noticed that on complex scenes with a lot of noise layers (8+) the export can crash the graphics card. I'll upload a work-around for that soon that works, though at a sacrifice in quality.

I tested the file fron that link. I can load the 3 saved files that comes with it, but the lack of a progress bar makes it appear that the program crashed while loading, but in the end it can load successfully.

2 demos of the Ogre library that use fragment shaders can't run on my computer, they crash with a message that says my GPU does not support fragment programs, but your program works beautifully :shock: .

One problem i found:
Most of the time i run Firefox, some game (on-line or not) and the apps i'm testing or developing, in that case your app. I don't tested how your app run if i close the others programs, but i never found any problem while testing the other tools and demos available in the forum, but when i select to exit from your program my keyboard and mouse becomes "locked" for around 20 seconds (it only occurs if i have some file loaded).

My suggestions are:
1 - Add a progress bar, or some type of "working" indicator, in any operation that takes time to finish, like loading.
2 - Add some information in all arguments of the layers, the information can be show in the status bar of your application while the user move the mouse over the value or name of the argument.
3 - Like spacegaier said. While the color dialog is open let the layer update in realtime while the user is playing with the colors.

You did an excellent job congratulations.

My brother made 2 tools for generating skyboxes for space games - you can check that: http://www.assemblerbot.info/version_en ... raphic.php (Skybox raytracer and Skybox generator). Just for info and maybe for some inspiration ;-)

Great suggestions! I plan on implementing all of them at some point. I'm not certain why the program freezes on exit though - that's really wierd, I wonder if it is crashing on exit or something.

Nice! Is the source code available somewhere? I do want to eventually add the ability to put other things in the backgrounds like custom placed graphics and 3d objects like planets or asteroids with lighting, but I'm probably not going to get to that for a bit.

New version of Spacescape is up. Version 0.2!

New features:
  • Progress bars for loading and exporting
  • Color preview for color picker
  • Help text and human readable titles for properties
  • Bug fixes for ATI x1950 card - all the RTT mipmaps were getting put on the mipmap 0 surface. Solution: disable mip maps
  • Disabled high res noise layer feature on export to help program not crash with complex scenes on export - still not good enough for really large exports though
  • Added another save example file - purple-nebula-complex.xml
  • Misc UI improvements

Just tested your new version: The new improvements really add well to the experience :) !

So far, there are only two improvements left from my point of view:
1. While saving, let the dialog automatically point to the save folder instead to the application folder.
2. Create a little help system or tutorial. My first results aren't that bad, but I am not able to create such mindblowing space backgrounds as you did with your examples. A proposal would be, to implement tooltips when hovering an attribute that will explain in 3-6 lines what this attribute does and/or perhaps a little help file that can be opened via the "Help" menu.

Last question: I guess that your tool is free to use, but how about the textures that come with it. May they be used for whatever we want or are there restrictions on them?

Thanks for the feedback! Those are good suggestions. I do need to make some kind of help to explain things better. Maybe a help dialog that explains some of the techniques I found that work well.

As for the images, how about Creative Commons Attribution License? The gimp file I used to create the flares is in the assets folder on sourceforge. How does Ogre license the textures that come with it?
