Re: Stained - The game [Public Demo Released]
i mean main character is moving too slow, he just walks.
not very suited for an action platformer.
but this might be a very late criticism since changing movement speed might break many game concepts.

Re: Stained - The game [Public Demo Released]
you did not sprint?
shift + move arrow will make the character run.
Shift + spacebar(jump)+ arrow will make a sprint jump
Also jump is dependent on how long you keep the spacebar pressed.
I think it was not very clear in the instructions, I will just update the readme file.

Re: Stained - The game [Public Demo Released]
there is no mention of sprint key in controls menu
usually it is Z key sprint X for attack in pc platformers. Z didnt sprint and i didnt see SHIFT (or any other sprint key) it in controls menu.
my fault sorry.

Re: Stained - The game [Public Demo Released]
You can probably add the movement keys instruction when one pressed Esc key while playing
A willow deeply scarred, somebody's broken heart
And a washed-out dream
They follow the pattern of the wind, ya' see
Cause they got no place to be
That's why I'm starting with me

Re: Stained - The game [Public Demo Released]
Yes, that is good idea, most people would like to see the control once they start the level. You can probably add the movement keys instruction when one pressed Esc key while playing
Also a key configuration is needed as "saejox" suggested Z key for sprint, Others might have their own choices for particular action . I am planning to build it inside the UI itself or a configuration file will be provided where you can configure your own control.
Just for sake of usability.

Looking great, from what I see in the trailer it reminds me a bit of Trine.
I think I will buy it on desura, if there's a linux version

Re: Stained - The game [Out Now]
Desura release will take few days, as there were some problems with the installer. It will come there early next week.
I am not sure about linux, lets say we build it for ubuntu, and put it on desura will that work? or we just have to follow conventional source -> build -> configure -> install process? The thing with linux is there are many of them centos/fedora/redhat/ubuntu. I am really not how software like games are distributed for linux.
if someone has in depth understanding of this please let me now, and i will see if that is possible.
Thanks All.

Re: Stained - The game [Out Now]
Hell no Most commercial game makers don't share the source of their engines ( ), so it's not uncommon to provide linux binaries. Although it would certainly be appreciated by the community to have their hands on the game's source - allowing for decent modding, ports to even more platforms etc.or we just have to follow conventional source -> build -> configure -> install process?
In general, it should work. If you are careful about which libraries (.so files <--> dll's on windows) you include in the build and which not, it can basically work on any (more or less recent) distribution. Of course, the most reliable solution would be to link the whole thing statically, but that's an additional build setup effort. Might be worth it, though.lets say we build it for ubuntu, and put it on desura will that work?
If there's any specific problems, feel free to PM me, I could probably help you out as I'm already building release linux binaries for another ogre project.
I could also do some beta testing (if there will be a linux build) for you, I suppose.

Re: Stained - The game [Out Now]
To answer this more in detail:
However, if you know linux then this is not really how software is installed usually. Most users prefer to use package managers, for obvious benefits. That's why many open source / free games have packages for several distributions available, either packaged by the developers of the game or by volunteer packagers of that distribution, that can be easily installed by the package manager. Of course, the downside is that each package is only made for one specific distribution and there isn't a unified format. That's why even in the open-source games scene, several projects also publish compiled binaries that will then work on every distribution at once.
So - in this case, you should be fine with compiling it on ubuntu and then distributing that binary. Unless you have so much time that you care to create individual packages for most distributions
For commercial games, most companies simply compile their game on one distribution (e.g. ubuntu). If they didn't screw up anything, it will work on any other distribution (that isn't 10 years old) as well. This compiled binary is then distributed in a zip archive, or with an installer (e.g. nixstaller).I am really not how software like games are distributed for linux.

If you have not tried the stained demo then this is the right time to do so. We have added 5 maps in the demo now and also more combat levels are added.

Thanks. We made the combat real simple now the older combat levels were really really hard most people given up after 5 levels. Now it is easier but we do have difficult levels for pro gamer.TheSHEEEP wrote:This one's definitely on my "play list"

I would say the review was okay, there were lots of "wow" movement for the reviewer. He did complaint about the controls most of the time which i think is because stained feels different than other games. It takes a little while to get used to the character movement and also you have to adjust the controls as it suits to you. Here is interesting article about it.
http://stained-thegame.com/controls
Reviewer also suggested to add a UI for changing the game controls. Which can be done in next update but many game use the config file for changing the controls.
Anyways, I am glad that LGR reviewed "Stained" and enjoyed it.

Re: Stained - The game [Out Now]
That's the first time I ever hear something like that, seriously. Even the worst case I remember were games that at least let the user change they controls from Preset A to Preset B, but config files... err.. that certainly wouldn't look like the right approach to the average gamer.Mind Calamity wrote:Which can be done in next update but many game use the config file for changing the controls.
