Stained - The game [Out Now]

Post by realaxis »

Hello Everyone,
We are glad to announced our game, Stained - Game is built on Ogre3d and bullet. Thanks for a such a great engine, Ogre team!

Stained Description :
Side-scrolling platforming and combat action in an ancient, mysterious castle featuring detailed 3D environments with a continually changing game world. Events are triggered by breaking windows, and outcomes are determined by the combination of glass pieces that litter the ground, and the variety of enemies that they assemble into. Solve puzzles by thinking of novel ways to break windows. Victory is usually temporary, as defeated foes can form again, or form entirely new ones. Place yourself at the mercy of the castle, or discover its secrets and attempt to bend its will to your whim.

Nicely done and an interesting gameplay idea.

One thing I noticed: There are some z-fighting issues at the beginning of the video.

The worlds look really good- and even the monsters are nice and unique :) good work!

If I had a gripe it would be when the player is doing jump attacks frames are being dropped or the animation is not smooth. It looked like he was warping around in the air to me.

Keep it up!

Thanks for comments,

I admit that character jump is little jerky at this moment, this particular defect is high on our agenda right now :)

Glad that everyone like the concept, The monsters are formed from stained glass and they have unique look and attack abilities. One can also notice that other active objects in game are also operated completely by glass such as chandelier. Overall the game play revolves around the concept of "Stained Glass".

Thanks

Great music. Excellent environments. Cool monsters. Neat idea.
The video was very nicely put together, too.

I'm in agreement that the movement/animation of the death character could be improved - mostly the jump.
But that's a small critique - the game looks great!

Neat idea and nice looking too. I'll +1 the suggestion of working on the main character animations. Since it's the one thing the player sees all the time, it'll be worth the extra effort. But the enviromnent looks top notch, I like the stained glass monsters, and the concept of smashing stained glass windows and fighting stained glass monsters is great.

@mkultra333 @jacmoe @jabberwocky
Thank you so much.

we had some miss-configuration in the character controller which was responsible for the wrapping at low frame rate, but that is all solved now. Actually it took us a while to figure out the best setting to update character controller and bullet.

Okay some good news finally :
Just updated the very first game play video, on the main post.

Thanks

I just realized that there is a mistake in the current Ogrenews about our game it says

"Nice little game called “Stained” has been released"

it should be

"Nice little game called “Stained” has been announced"

Can somebody please correct that?

It looks really good.

Don't take this the wrong way, but I don't think the idea (breaking glass which turns into enemies) is big enough to build a game around. I might expect it from a single level or a boss in a game, but not from an entire game. You will likely need to add more concepts to make this a commercial success.

You are absolutely correct but i think you miss major point from the background. Breaking windows which then turns into enemies is just one part of our game. The monstrosities of the castle has few other forms too! When you break windows it can form anything ranging from enemies to friends to health packs or puzzle solving elements etc.
Quoting from the background story :
the castle has a mind of its own. With a deeply rooted need to protect itself from intruders. And it has the means to do so. If you break certain precious things, such as the stained glass windows, the castle will turn against you. The shattered pieces will come alive, forming monstrosities whose only aim is to see you perish. The castle never stops throwing obstacles in your way to hinder your progress, and you will need to brave all of its considerable offensive capabilities in order to progress.

Player can do following things in the game
1) Explore the 3d world
2) Solve puzzles
3) Fight with glass monsters using different weapons with varying effects
4) Use interactive object such as chandelier, gem platform, sliding platform, glass floors, flying shards etc..

We do have many things which you can interact with (other than breaking windows and fighting) however the concept of this game is around stained glass so obviously you are going to see them a lot ofcourse in different forms.

Very, very good. The combat system looks pretty good to me, and the game dynamics as a whole.

Great job.

Thanks, we have spend a good deal of time on combat system, and now the physics, NPC animation, sound is all coming together really nice.

As you all know we have used blender for modelling and level creation we are thinking to give away the export tools along with the game. The export tools include a blender UI which creates different game objects and then we use the ogre mesh exporter. This process is not very user friendly though, people are used to a level editor where one click and everything goes into the game. Will it be a good idea to call it a level exporter and include in the game?

Will make a video to explain what is possible with the export tools.

Looking forward to hear your thoughts.

Hi there,

Finally we got some time do put together a small video showing how the levels are built using blender and exported to Ogre. We have created a simple interface in blender to place objects in the levels and bind the properties etc. in the process we also use ogre mesh exporter + the dotscene exporter

The game environment looks really great and polished!

What stage is game currently in? Alpha/Beta or ready for release?

And how many levels [gameplay length] will the game have?

Nice job!

Game is currently in beta stage, and we are still doing some polishing (It;s never actually every time we run one polishing cycle next day we feel like doing some more) which will be done soon.

Regarding game length :
For a new player it takes 3 hours to complete entire game and 1-2 hour for difficult mode, so it is more like 4-5 hours of game play. We believe game has lots of re playability.
Level designing tools will further increase the time you can spend with this game.

Re: Stained - The game [Public Demo Released]

Post by realaxis »

Hello EveryOne,

Just made the public demo available on our website, It would be nice if some ogre user can test out stained and let us know their feedback. There are several Ogre specific settings that can be tweaked if someone is interested. This demo include 2 stages from our game and should take 15-20 minute to complete.

Download Link : http://www.stained-thegame.com/public-demo

I would appreciate suggestions and feedback.

Thanks

just played it, twice.
cant say much about game design since demo is very short.

I like the visuals a lot.
Music sets the mood quite nicely.

some criticism,
lacks many sound effects. like footsteps, landing, jumping, picking up shards etc..
combat lacks feedback, there is a hit particle but i could barely understand if i hit them or not. constant blinking red is also misleading.
reaper model is nice looking but movement animation problematic, i am faced with glass dragon charging but MC is just walking. I was irritated by the slow movement.

i see you aim for September a release.
i hope your game gets a lot of attention.
good luck.

Glad to hear that. We are working on sound.

You mean the red colored sword holding guard was walking very slowly? Actually he is the first monster that gets introduced in the game so thought it might be useful to have him slow. But there another green color guy who is pretty hard to fight(?)

NPC logic is highly configurable, will hear all feedback and configure them accordingly before final release.

Thanks again.
