Turin - Before the city

Post by lordsme »

Hi veryone,
here's some screenshot of our last project, a video concerning Turin area evolution during last 2 million years, using real world elevation maps etc.

Everything is rendered in real-time using our previs software MESH, then post-produced for the final video, a 12 camera (360 degrees split) visualization.
The final video was good but later we developed more post processing filters and shaders, so we updated the project and took some screenshot that I post here: real-time renders only, no post production.
Software used: MESH, Maya, WorldMachine, Photoshop and GIMP, VueInfinite (for skyboxes only).
MESH uses OGRE as internal rendering engine, of course, HydraX for water rendering, and a lot of custom developed shaders and production pipeline.

Wow, that's awesome!
Impressive mountains and really good terrain/water/sky integration!

It's an honour to see Hydrax in such a beautiful environment!

I kinda wished the skies would be SkyX instead of static sky boxes (I really wish to see SkyX like that and still free, it would be like salting Crytek's eyes  ).

That's impressive work you guys achieved there, for a moment I doubted you even used OGRE, until I saw Hydrax in the ocean screenshot.

I would love to see a video of this!

Also, what's the FPS rate ?

Looks absolutely amazing!!! With moving/animated skies (buzzword: SkyX ;) ) it might be even better, but that is in fact something that only a video can show. So please, please give us one!

FPS is more or less 25 in scenes with HydraX, anything is optimized at all, because in the end the delivery of the project was a video. We are trying to use our previz software MESH to produce videos, when the customer is looking for a very quick solution, and has no idea about camera animation yet :) So we edit cameras and lighting on the fly with MESH, while assets are iteratively authored in Maya.

We'll make a video with these assets soon, the one we delivered in the end had older and less nice assets (I hadn't implemented any post processing shaders yet :) ).

Great looking mountains. Makes me think of the beginning of one of the LOTR movies.

Well, that was our reference but... I think we're really far from that :o

Some of the picture blew me away. That looks excellent. Lots of nice details.

Being it a project for a fixed-camera-animation, a linear video, near clouds are just billboards with some nice shaders on.
Far clouds are incorporated in the skybox, of course.
I tried SkyX but in the end there was no time to include it in our framework.
Next time!

Absolutely beautiful. What great textures on those mountains.
What was the reason you chose to use a realtime rendering framework like Ogre to do a pre-rendered movie?

Thank you very much, we had great time using WorldMachine2 along with photo references in Photoshop.

We develop our previz-software MESH and we use it also for linear prooductions (videos) which needs very short delivery time.
About this project, we had only 1 month to deliver a 6 minutes long video (12 screen, each one at 1k resolution more or less), when no final stoyboard or asset was developed yet.
So we used MESH to previsualize it and produce it making 3d assets, storyboard, camera animations all at the same time.
Some days before the deadline we captured all the final frames (probably 15-20minutes videos).
Then we sent it to post-production, that was already working on low res renderings, to edit the final video.

So, like others are doing, we are trying to use a previz software as a fast production tool :)

Here you have only real time renders, by the way.
:)

Reporting akanshah's post as spam seems to have no effect. Post is still there. Maybe the moderator checking did not see that his post is just a copy/past of a part of the previous post by lordsme. Would be cool if one could add an explanation when reporting a post.

I've deactivated his account. If other mods want to delete him - be my guess, but he wasn't technically spamming (yet).
