Post by jacmoe »

I normally would be the first to suggest going open source, but when I look at your project, I can't help but be impressed by your work. :)
What you really need is some marketing!
I see something really polished here, so you just need to get it out to people. Team up with someone you can trust and who knows the right people.
Don't give up. :)

If you are burned out, then take a break before making such important decision.
If you are not, then going open is also a great way to out source workload.
But then you will lose your investment, unless you can land a lot of consulting jobs.

Good luck :)
You deserve to earn money from this, imho.

what jacmoe said + marketing, marketing, marketing
with ogre 2.0 this can be as good as unreal 4...
i also think you deserve to earn some money...as this looks like one of the best tools iv'e seen...
problem is that only one guy can't compete with giants( burn-out syndrome, lack of reliablity etc... )
so either you find investors and build a proper company...
or team up with the right people...
or just don't compete with unreal/unity...
one option is to keep it small and grow slowly like neoaxis...
middleware became a cruel market so another approach is rebranding your tools to different audiance/market
example: GarysMod is actualy a full game engine, but he's not competing with unreal/unity and doing very well, with one guy...
open-sourcing can be a two-bladed sword...
goood luck...
the woods are lovely dark and deep

is need IE be Open Sourced as Unreal4?
oh,you mean "commercial open source"...thats not open source at all...
from what i know, "commercial open source" and dual-licence scheme projects hardly enjoy FOSS community conributions...
it's purposed more to enable flexability of the product, and maybe help a bit with the product PR/sells...
even GPL is starting to be considered unattractive for FOSS fans...
unity is doing quite well without the "open source" thing, it doesn't look like they are going to change it just because of unreal
it realy depends on the target audiance...but i can see no harm in doing that...

If you can afford it, keep it commercial.
You need to sell it more. :D

From beggining IE designed as engine closed(editor and core libs).

Therefore: IE for noncommercial using(looking toying and building tests games) steel free with all powerfull toolset and capabilities to create game.

In plans was opensourced "game base" on c++ code. But this base creates by game developers. Not me.

About commercial using still floating license dialog. In out territory many poor developers that cant pay even 5$ per month. For poors or another possible dialog. He worthy for costs from salying of this works. I IE can help.

burn-out syndrome
- i am extrimal programmer that can develop 16 hours per day. After years of practice this is easy. Even with second social job.

after IE anite was ready engine produce AAA game class cut-scenes like U3 Samaritan.

One bit of critique: you really need to give us larger images :)
I really want to have a closer look, and your forum post doesn't have much larger images.
You could probably post to a picture hosting site and link to it?
Just a small suggestion. Because..
It looks amazing :D

If you post large images on this forum, the forum software will turn them into thumbnails, so feel free to do that. :)

or better yet, put a direct link to the IE download, or build a simple web page( in english ) you can build pretty cool website with WIX in less than an hour...
that is unless you are trying to scare us away from downloading the engine...
the forum you are using is not very friendly...and downloading torrent is useful only if you have enough seeders/leeches...

thats good to hear i was starting to worry... :P
i'm sure once the storm passes you'll understand that you have a great technology tool - very polished - nearly ready to be published....
as for the "compitition" once you start with doing real business i'm sure you can find your niche, and clients....
while all engines basicly supply the same things, each has its own uniqe way of handling stuff...

on other notes - i know of at least 4 ogre based game engine heading torward alpha/beta this year...
some think buisness compition is bad, i thing it can be for the good, raising the bar while generating more users and more interest in the area of game making...
i predict that game making technology will become a commodity and with a much increased user based( much bigger than now )
their will be plenty of bread for every-body...

it reminds me of this place i know, in which there was only one resturant which was always empty...
years past and now there are many resturants and bars in this area...all packed with customers...

anyway cheer-up its not all that bad, you may not be able to beat unity over night but you still have your stuff going, and it looks realy good...

i think this engines like to stay under radar - and i'm gonna respect that...
one that is not trying that hard is massive engine...
all i say is with limited relyabilty since i know development timelines are very liquid  and sometimes projects are canceled or change their goals...
i dont know if they are going to be open-source, but free seems to be the new standard in todays market...
