Salvation Prophecy Linux port

Post by Jabberwocky »

Update: May-6-2013
Linux port released on desura.

Original post:

Image

Salvation Prophecy is running nicely on my Ubuntu 12.04 box (32-bit).

If there are any linux users who would like to give the linux port a test run, fire me an email: jabberwocky (AT) salvationprophecy.com
Please only do so if you're willing to send me a bit of playtesting info (system info, log files, etc) in case of problems.

It's a long way from being tested on all flavors/distros of linux, so it might be a bumpy ride. ;) It does not yet run properly on 64-bit linux - I'm looking into this. I can't build a 64-bit version of the game because of pre-compiled closed source libs (PhysX), so the solution seems to involve stuffing a 64-bit system full of 32-bit libs. Linux gurus welcome to chime in.

Also, if you're interested in any details of my linux port work, let me know! I'm happy to chat about it. :)

(And, as always, steam greenlight votes are very appreciated - the game is getting closer!)

Also, the game can now run in French, for that huge subset of French ogre3d space sim linux fans. ;)
(Although a few tweaks to the translations are ongoing.)

As a Linux guy, this is awesome to see. More games on Linux, which will probably increase even more with Steam going live on Ubuntu. Already e-mail Jabberwocky to see if I can help :)

Awesome! I had been hoping to see the port sometime soon. I already bought a copy of your game for Windows, but I will buy it for Linux too if it will help you keep making games. E-mail incoming. :D

Any chance of an expansion, sequal, or an equally ambitious project? I love the large scope of Salvation Prophecy and I feel there is allot of room to grow. It could serve as a firm platform for an even greater game where each of the gameplay types are more fleshed out and refined. You could even add a couple gameplay types.

BTW, you are still an army of one, right?

@Herb - agreed having steam on linux is huge for linux gaming.

@holocronweaver
For sure, there's so much that could be done with a sequel / expansion. I've certainly thought a lot about doing it. Probably it depends on how long it takes for Salvation Prophecy to get greenlit, and how well it sells there once it is. For an indie game, Salvation Prophecy is a huge complex project. I don't need to get rich, but I need to buy groceries once in a while.

I didn't do the artwork or the music - I contracted that out and those artists definitely put their stamp on the game. Other than that yeah it was just me.

emails incoming!

Yeah I`d like to release through the Ubuntu store, but I haven`t looked into it yet.

I`ll release the linux version on Desura for sure, and I`m pretty excited about Steam`s new linux client (would love to get the game on there).

The linux port has been released on desura.

I wrote up a little blurb about the release on my website. By far, the biggest issue which took more time than expected was coding proper support for fullscreen on dual-monitor linux systems. I probably spent way more time than I should have working on that. But playing in a window just isn't as cool.

Hey Jabberwocky, if you're still looking for testers I'd be more than happy to help. I've been following you for a while now, and the game looks amazing. Just waiting for it to pop up on steam, and if I can help accomplish that I certainly will.

this is OT but just a quick question on your system how does it run? overcloking ok? I am looking at the same setup but with the newer components FX 8150, 990 chipset, 2400mhz ram. But I know it will be only slightly better. I not decided on a gpu yet but am going amd also if to go for water cooling or not.

Sorry again for hijaking :)
