FBO causing problems

Post by milliams »

Just recently I've become unable to run any Ogre based program which uses FBO. This is the sort of log I get and it just sits there after having printed this line, doing apparently nothing:

If I, for example, run Funguloids and choose FBO in the dialog that appears before the game, I get the above problem. But if I choose another RTT method, there's no problem.

I'm running openSUSE 10.3 and OGRE, Cg, X, NVIDIA drivers etc. are all installed from RPMs and I've tried reverting them variously to older versions but it doesn't help.

I really can't work out what is responsible for this. Has anyone else had this problem with OGRE and does anyone have any idea how I might solve it?

Many thanks

Hmm. I wonder if this is common to the 169.x stream of drivers, I see they released a new one for Windows a couple of days ago. I've heard of a GLSL linker problem with some arrangements in these drivers too. I'm still running 163.x.

I will have to see whether I can recreate this. If I can, I'll have to raise this with nvidia and find out what the issue is, but it's likely to be a while over the xmas period. Are you able to try an older driver revision?

It only happens with 169.07, the previous stable version, 100.14.19, is ok.

169.07 hangs after the glx window has been created, Root::initialise() never returns.

Yes, I've heard it said (by an nVidia employee, in fact) that "people believe that nVidia has better drivers than ATI -- the fact is that they just have more drivers; if one doesn't work, try another!" ;)
Do you need help? What have you tried?

Really we need a stack trace - try running it through gdb and pausing it when it hangs.

The 169.x drivers do have a new GLSL bug which we worked around in 1.4.6, but other than that I haven't had any issues with them (Windows though).

When it hangs it is too late ;-) but I manually stepped through the code up to GLFBOManager::detectFBOFormats line 339 (1.4.6 cvs) which is

Code: Select all

glDeleteFramebuffersEXT(1, &fb);
It crashes for x==22 that logs

Code: Select all

FBO PF_FLOAT16_RGB depth/stencil support: D0S0 D16S0 D24S0 D32S0
which happens to be the first float format. Maybe try skipping float formats and see what happens?

Here the backtrace for the records:

I can confirm the exact same problem with the same driver version on Mandriva 2008.0 (A Geforce 6800 too). I've also traced it to the same call in GLFBOManager:339.

That's gotta be a driver brainfart. There's no way in hell glDeleteFramebuffersEXT should just fall over like that.

I fail to see how we can do anything about this, there's nothing wrong with that call and no reason we should avoid doing it for x=22 ie PF_FLOAT16_R. If we do, anyone using that format would be screwed (including me, I use it all the time). This needs raising with nvidia, but I don't have a test Linux box set up just yet, can one of you raise it in accordance with: http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_disp ... 69.07.html

Ok, just to keep you informed I've gotten a response from Nvidia that this issue is in "the queue for a repro attempt".

(Their message also had the disclaimer "This email message is for the sole use of the intended recipient(s) and may contain confidential information. Any unauthorized review, use, disclosure or distribution is prohibited." so... eh... it's all hearsay... ;) )

Interestingly on Windows as well as the GLSL linker issue (which is worked around) with the 169.x drivers, I'm getting some weird stalls in GL now when I don't use VSync. Seems to mostly affect very high frame rates. I'm investigating with them, this never happened in the 163.x driver stream.

A small update: I have upgraded my system to kernel 2.6.24 today. I tried 169.09 and 172.05 (automagically downloaded by the nvidia installer, probably beta). Both exhibited the same behaviour as 169.07.

As 100.14.19 does not build against 2.6.24 (at least out of the box) I am using 96.43.05 now.

With nvidia driver 169.09 and GeForce 8500 GT and it runs ok.
With same driver 7900 GS (laptop) it hangs.

Could you provide ogre.log outputs for both of these?

Tomorrow I will post the 8500GT ogre.log.

My friend with the 7900GS will be back from vactions in two weeks. Then I'll post the log.

I have exactly the same problem with 7600GT and 169.09 driver.
Did anyone try out the new 169.12 driver reliased 2 days ago?

Unfortunately I can't test myself at the moment.

Same error here, using gentoo and nvidia-drivers 169 (both .09 and .12 have this bug).

Here is the Ogre log with 100.14.19 drivers :

Is there some nvidia thread we can bump?

I'm having the same issue with a 7600GS and driver 169.12.

I haven't got a response from Nvidia more than the first one. I will however try this first and see if it solves the issue: http://www.ogre3d.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=39933

For me at least, the problem persists with that patch.

Hi there,

unfortunately, this error consists under Ubuntu 8.04 too, running the last RC with all updates on a Fujitsu laptop with a geforce go 6800 and the NVIDIA 169.12 driver... would be important for nvidia to fix this!

Greetings, Tom
