RakNet is a mature, commercial cross-platform game networking engine, written in C++.

The first thing one should do with RakNet(external link) is develop a text-based version of whatever they want to accomplish.
For example, you might want to just code a console chat client to learn how to use RakNet, then implement it once your game has a good base framework.
