I have downloaded the binary distribution at http://tuan.kuranes.free.fr/Ogre.html because I don't have visual studio to compile ogre.

I can run Demo_PagingLandScape2.exe in the bin directory. However, when I try to run mapeditor.exe, it just crashes saying "runtime error....".

Any insights? Ogre log below:

mapeditor doesn't work for now. we're waiting next generation Falagard's work... or meanwhile a Cegui master that can tweak the newterrain.layout causing the bug.

I think this was the latest binary dist I did of the map editor, and it's from May!! but you can check it out if you want.

I wasn't focusing on the terrain features for this one, only the object placement features, so the terrain editing itself is probably broken.

I think you can generate a terrain using the noise lib stuff - be sure to pick square size (1024x1024 for example) and give it a name prior to generating.

Switch the splatting edit 2 if you want to paint textures onto the terrain, and then try playing with the item placement stuff.

People have reported major problems with that version - crashes, etc. If you had my latest incarnation you'd be reporting problems too, but I've added a lot of functionality since then, including background loading of assets, complete re-work of the metadata system, character movement using 3rd person including collision detection, sliding along walls and jumping on meshes and terrain, precise mesh picking using opcode, LOD fading, and trees.

Here's my last backed up version online that doesn't have the trees and won't compile as-is. However you can look at the code:
