do most people actually use pygame for keyboard input since the tutorials and sinbad say Ogre really isnt designed for input?

For input handling you should use pyOIS. Istari's done a great job of creating the python wrappers for OIS and includes it in his binary download. The demos in Ogre 1.3 use OIS and the demos in pyOgre1.3 will use pyOIS.
