It's the factor by which velocities will decrease by (kind of resistance by air drag). So even if your friction is zero, there's a limit to the max speed you can achieve. There will be a point where the rate at which you will increase your velocity will be equal to the dampingFactor.

Linear Damping is for linear motion (velocity).
Angular Damping is for rotational motion (omega).
