I have in my Max scene lots of meshes that are instances of a single mesh, but the scene exporter exports each one of them as a single mesh. Is there a way for the scene file to link to a single mesh when there are several instances?

If the objects are true instances, then they should be exported as instances too (a unique mesh file)
Send me the scene or a simple test bed scene where this issue is present and i will take a look at it
I'm having trouble with instances at the moment too.
If I hide everything but these instances and update the viewport the instances show up in the ogre viewport ok.
If I unhide the level and update, only the first instance shows up in the ogre viewport.
I get the same problem with the exported meshes too.
here's some pics and a test file.
This first pic shows you the 3 islands, 2 of them are instances of the one that does render correctly. I left an extra mesh in there as in this case it seems to go wrong when there is a non instanced mesh in the scene.
This second pic shows you the instances working once the non instance scenery mesh is hidden
BTW with the test file the results are worse as the instances never show up in the ogre viewport.
I'm leaving a test file that saved out only the items shown in the images, the file would be too big if I included the whole file.

I'm using Dagon version of the scene loader and in our engine, but the display is the default azathoth one thats still shipping with ofusion.

Its better if the test scenes contains just the basis needed to reproduce the issue, so the your posted scene is good

I tested the your file today, and it works correctly
Do you have the latest hotfix applied?
I don't think I have any hotfixes, I can't log into:

The only hotfix I found in search was for light attenuation, which I did install. Perhaps you could add a sticky topic with hotfixes? unless I'm supposed to be able to get the ones in the above URL?

The #57 should be the newest hotfix for CE
Did you tested with this applied?
I'll try installing it again, perhaps I didn't do it right or something.
OK tried installing the update again. I havent tried in the game yet, but I have had some success in the viewport. Not working quite how I expected though.
I usualy check all the viewport checkboxes, and just do an update to refresh the scene, this doesn't show instances.
Update selected seems to work if I select the instances individualy, but if I select a group of instances only the first one updates. if I update the entire scene all the instances disappear again.
Not sure what to do at this point. I may have to reinstall Max when I have a moment to spare and see if that helps.
