Recent non-game projects in the showcase forum

We keep saying that OGRE is deliberately not a game engine, and
recently there have been some really interesting examples of it being
used for other purposes:

  • fijuu2 is an interactive audio/visual installation which toured the uk as part of Cybersonica 06 recently
  • EDM Studio have produced a 3D medical visualisation system as part of their aim of creating interactive virtual reality exhibits for museums and industry
  • Seule avec loup renders choregraphics and users can interact with it via motion which is captured with a laser
  • JCVR Head Inspection is a simulation to train inspectors of Harley Motorcycle engine parts

Whilst we love to see game projects made with OGRE too, it's always
refreshing and constantly fascinating to see the wider range of
applications using OGRE as a purpose-built drop-in rendering solution.

Anonymous CVS is back

Anonymous CVS has been out of sync for a few weeks following hardware problems at Sourceforge, but they have now rolled out their new servers and the anonymous sync time is back down to around 2 hours – and we're assured that will reduce to nothing over time.

Note that the CVS servers have changed, for future convenience you should now access CVS via the alias cvs.ogre3d.org which we have mapped to the new server.

As
a reminder for those who didn't partake of the release candidates,
Dagon contains a sizeable number of new features, which were discussed
in the original RC1 post. If you are migrating from the previous stable version of OGRE (Azathoth) you should definitely read the porting notes. For those that did use the release candidates, the full detail of this post lists the changes since RC2.

Google Summer of Code 2006

OGRE is participating in the Google Summer of Code this year, and the student application process opens today. We haven't done this before, so we're looking forward to seeing what idea students come up with and how the whole process works. We've put up a list of project ideas adapted and extended from a few things which have been bouncing around for a while.

If you're thinking of applying, at an absolute minimum you must read the Google Student FAQ, and the OGRE Summer of Code Guidance page thoroughly.

We have also set up a dedicated Summer of Code forum which will be used for all discussions on this topic, if you have an idea and want to bounce it off others before submission (a very good idea), this is the place to do it.

[Update]Here's a direct link to the student signup page.

Here's looking forward to an interesting few months!
