Fluids with metaball mesh

What is the state of developing physx fluids with metaball mesh? Anyone got around to do this for nxogre? I am referring to something like this: http://www.ss.iij4u.or.jp/~amada/fluid/. I am really dying to play with something like that!

I see that SPE has done these fluids with metaballs very nicely:

Maybe someone could use this engines implementation of fluids for inspiration?
