Just thought this would be interesting to the NxOgre group :)

I just hope this doesn't mean nvidia getting greedy and changing the physx license. I kinda like the price where its at now.

Wow this is a death blow for all free physics engines, open source or not.
Because now Physx will be available in GPU as well as Physx cards.
An since the can bundle the driver with the GPU driver people will not mind to get the driver installed since you have to have it anyway.

I just hope that they keep the PPU, doing all the physics on the GPU just seems like it would slow it down when it could be used to do shaders...

I agree. Indie development including NxOgre would die if they did it, and I would be beyond furious spending almost two years of my life on a project that cannot be used anymore.

However, I'm all for NVidia bundling the PPU in any form as they desire. GeForce+PPU or nForce5/6 anyone?

p.s. I sticked this post and added another option if you don't mind - It's for the ones who really hate this idea. ;)

I dont know wether to choose good or bad because we dont know what nvidia will do with phyx, do we? Maybe they will set it free for all platforms  or give us the source code :P

We can relax)

"Here is what I can tell you at this point.

This is a quote from Michael Steele VP of Marketing (my boss).

There have been a lot of questions about the future of PhysX technology now that AGEIA is part of NVIDIA. We want to assure you that NVIDA remains committed to hardware-accelerated physics and will support AGEIA's current PhysX processor customer commitments as well as future business. With regards to PhysX software, NVIDIA will continue to support the current SDK across PC and next-gen consoles and will also begin the work to accelerate PhysX on the GPU. The PhysX binaries are still royalty-free and there is still a charge for source code. Both AGEIA and NVIDIA share the same commitment and passion for gaming and are looking forward to pushing PhysX technology much further."

Oh thank goodness.

With Havok now being owned by Intel it was at least expected, and wasn't there a rumor a while back about some company wanting Ageia? At least we can always look on the bright side; It wasn't AMD. Look what they did with ATI.

I say bring on the GPU/PPU cards and the next nForce chipset and NxOgre for everyone!!!

Of course Ageia said only 2 weeks ago that there was not going to be a buyout, so the only way to really know what the future holds is to observe it (ie. wait and see).

Perhaps at that time they was in early negotation and didn't or couldn't say anything incase the deal flopped.

However, in the long run it won't affect that much. Perhaps we'll be downloading the SystemSoftware from Nvidia instead, and have a few more classes and enum's to handle the GPU support. ;)

I'm just glad they're keeping the SDK free.

Well hopefully this will help more systems come with the physics cards, and of course hopefully it remains free for everyone.

:D I got a sticky!

I don't think nvidia could mess this one up, if you've ever looked around on there site you can get code of a lot of stuff they have worked for free. I think this is going to be the best thing that has happened to Ageia, big names draw big gaming companies, big gaming companies mean more PPUs all around :)

If anything, nVidia will accelerate the release of updates/feature additons/bug fixes. This is a great thing to happen... although now, ATI has no where to go except to make its own physics gpu thingamajig.........

They could buy newton...

I think hell would freeze over before that would happen. The Newton developer is very deterministic.

They could mabe do a Bullet based physique engine accelerated by there graphiques cards?
