Over the past few months, many add-on and tool projects have been springing up, some of which have been maintained outside OGRE on either their own websites or personal pages. This has worked fairly well, but as these projects become more numerous and more interesting, we saw the merit in trying to bring them onboard more to promote their development.

To this end, we’ve created a new module in CVS called ‘ogreaddons’ – this module will be an unsupported ‘incubator’ for tools and plugins, where people can collaborate on these tools close to the original OGRE development code. In addition, it will be a lot easier for people to find those developing 3rd-party tools which haven’t reached the level of maturity required to be part of the main OGRE release yet.

Anyone who has a useful tool or add-on for OGRE should contact us and we will set up a subfolder of the module for their project. Your tool must be at least partially demonstrable before asking for it to be included in the add-ons. People wanting to evaluate the tools for themselves will be able to checkout the new module just like the main OGRE source.

We have established 3 initial projects:

– Ogre4J: Java binding to OGRE (bytelord / macross)

– OgreFSRAD: tools for using Fluid Studios radiosity processor to statically light OGRE scenes (psyclonist)

– LMTSConverter: converter for LMTools (lightmap generator) (psyclonist)

The authors of these tools will be uploading their current versions soon, and we hope to be welcoming many more of the projects we’ve heard about over the last few months too.
