Thanks to all the students who took the time to apply to OGRE. As has happened every year in GSoC, there were additional applications that we would have happily accepted too had we been able to, but at the end of the day we can only accept a certain number each year.
All students will be getting a welcome email from me imminently – the next month is mostly about settling in to the community and getting prepared for when coding is scheduled to begin in late May. Here’s to another great Summer of Code!

The Google Summer of Code 2008 student application process is now open!
Any students wanting to apply to do an OGRE project should firstly read the Google application instructions in full. If you haven’t reviewed it already, you can also look at our Ideas List for ideas of projects we might be interested in – however do please note that these are suggestions only; we’re very open to new ideas in addition to this list. So if you’ve thought of a project idea that we haven’t, by all means propose it!
Edit (31 March 08): Google has extended the student application deadline to 7th April.
In addition to the general Google documentation, I’ve put together a few specific notes to bear in mind (click Read More for details):

Quite a few excellent projects have sprung up since the last Community News Update. I wasn’t able to list all of the great ones since there were so many, but here are just a few. As always, apologies go out in advance to those who weren’t given mention.
- Libraries & Add-ons:
- Hydrax 0.2 – Easy-to-use water rendering add-on for OGRE.
- Particle Universe 0.7 – A feature-rich particle plug-in inspired by ParticleFX.
- DirectX 10 Render System – A render system is in the works for DirectX10, though it’s still early in development. The source code is available on the OGRE CVS.
- Games:
- ZeroGear – Has been announced on the OGRE showcase forums. ZeroGear is a "fast-paced and light-hearted kart combat game."
- Portalized 0.30 – A mind boggling project allowing objects to move through physically dynamic portals.
- The Far Wilds – A multiplayer fantasy strategy game with configurable armies.
- Wings of Fury 2 – A remake of the classic airplane fighting game has been announced.
- Lucignolo Il Videogioco – The 3D adventure game based off of the Italian TV series has hit the store shelves in Italy.
- Other:
- Soft Shadows Demo – A great example of how to implement soft shadows into your OGRE application without using the example framework.
- Ember 0.5.0 – A 3D Worldforge client licensed under the GPL.
- Proton Scene Editor – Also announced in the OGRE showcase forums, this editor works with levels, materials, scripts, shaders and more.
Thanks to everyone who has taken time out of their busy schedules to contribute to these projects–a lot of man hours went into them.

We’re pleased to welcome Assaf Raman to the OGRE Team – Assaf has been contributing to the community for a considerable time now, and has most recently been putting a lot of effort into the DirectX 10 render system, so as of today he becomes our official DirectX10 maintainer. Welcome on board Assaf!

We’re very pleased to announce that OGRE is participating in the Google Summer of Code 2008, which makes this our third year being involved in this great program.
The student application process doesn’t open until March 24th, but if you’re interested in applying, now is a good time to do some preparatory work. Google provide some good advice on the subject which we recommend you read and digest. If you have any questions, please post them in our dedicated Summer of Code forum.
Here’s looking forward to another great summer.
