“Pro OGRE 3D Programming” Published Next Week

{mosimage}“Pro OGRE 3D Programming”, by Gregory Junker (aka ‘Xavier’ in the forums) and published by Apress, is out next week! The publication date is 25th September in the USA and hopefully it should reach other regions shortly afterwards. “Pro OGRE 3D Programming” is the first published book dedicated to the subject of learning OGRE, and is aimed at fairly proficient developers who are newcomers to OGRE. Congratulations to Greg for getting the book done, we hope it will be useful to many OGRE users.

Google Summer of Code 2006 Roundup

Well, summer is finally over and the Google Summer of Code 2006 has also drawn to a close. This was our first year participating, and has been a learning curve for all concerned, but it has been a very rewarding one nonetheless. I think I speak for everyone involved on the Ogre side when I say that it’s great that Google invests very publically and openly in open source like this – long may the programme continue.

We had 6 student projects, covered by 4 mentors – more detail on the projects themselves can be found in the wiki and particularly in the Summer of Code Forum, where students posted their thoughts and progress. I’m glad to say that all 6 projects reached successful conclusions; that’s not to say the work is over – many of the students are still working on doing further polishing or extending their projects as we speak, but all achieved most or all of their project goals, and provided valuable contributions to the Ogre community. And hopefully, had a good time in the process 🙂 Here’s a summary of each of the projects:

OGRE 1.2.3 [Dagon] Released!

{mosimage}We're pleased to announce another maintenance release for those on the Dagon stable version, v1.2.3. Has a nice ring to it I think you'll agree. 🙂 As usual the full details of the content of this release can be found in the full version of this post, click on the "Read More…" link below to see it.

Updated this release, apart from the main source and SDKs, are a number of tools – the command line tools, and the Milkshape and XSI exporters. So be sure to update if you're using those. Also of note is that the Code::Blocks / MinGW environment no longer requires STLport (see the wiki), and OSX has a brand new set of Universal binary dependencies for you to download.

We hope you continue to enjoy using Ogre!

Community news round-up

There are always tons of interesting things going on in the community, as anyone who keeps up with the forums knows, but sometimes I like to lift a few gems out onto this front page for the more casual observers. 🙂 This time:

  1. The Blob continues to gain critical acclaim since its release – it's been positively featured in major publications including French magazine Joystick and UK magazine Edge, and received a Gold Award on GameTunnel. I definitely recommend playing it, it's a lot of fun.
  2. FragFist released a bunch of new screenshots and took a final demo to the Leipzig Games Convention last week. It's looking good, we can't wait to see the demo ourselves – should be available any day now so watch the forums.
  3. Show Mesh was added to the tools downloads / links section, it's an open source mesh / animation / shadows / fog viewer based on Qt and OGRE
  4. particleAccelerator is a new particle system editor based on wxWidgets and is looking like worthy competition for the existing CEGui-based particle editor, one to watch I think
  5. Rastullahs Lockenpracht and Arid Ocean joined the ranks of our featured projects

OGRE's community continues to go from strength to strength, it's really difficult to keep up sometimes – I hope this quick summary helps!

New OSX Maintainer

Justin Walsh has kindly volunteered to become our new Mac OSX maintainer, and is in the process of sorting out universal binaries for Dagon and Eihort. Previously we only provided precompiled dependencies for PPC, but now we should be able to provide both. Thanks to Justin for pitching in and helping out!
