OGRE 1.2.2 [Dagon] Released!

{mosimage}Yes, it's that time again when we push out a new maintenance release for all those people (probably the majority of you) working on the current stable release. Once again this is about dotting i's, crossing t's and squashing bugs that have gone unnoticed; whilst this isn't an urgent upgrade we do advise all users to update since there are no interface breaking changes (as usual on the stable branch) so it will just be a case of rebuilding to take advantage of it. A complete list of the changes is available in the full text of this post.

For those of you wondering what else is going on, Eihort development (Ogre 1.4) continues apace and you can keep up to date with the list of changes in the wiki. We advise users to remain on the stable Dagon branch for production work, but if you're curious you can always get the very latest from CVS and try it out; testing is always welcome.

More featured projects

A couple more projects have been cherry-picked from our Showcase forum and placed in the hallowed hall that is our Featured Projects area:

  • The Blob is a fun game designed as a fun interactive illustration what the Dutch city of Utrech will look like after it's 10 year makeover. You play a blob-like alien who has to absorb 'paint characters' and paint the city in different colours, particularly certain buildings of interest.
  • Agent Hugo is a game featured on television broadcast shows around the world where children interact with the character using a touch-tone phone.

Interestingly Agent Hugo is now the second Ogre-based game which has been delivered through broadcast television, the first being Tank Wars (Finland only).

New Maya Exporter

{mosimage}A significant update to the Maya exporter is now available, courtesy of bisco! Head over to the tools download area now to upgrade your version.

The enhancements include writing binary mesh and skeleton files directly instead of going via an intermediate XML file, direct support for polygonal meshes (no triangulation required), and support for morph and pose animation in addition to skeletal animation supported in previous versions. Full details of the new feature set can be found in the full text of this post. Big thanks to bisco for his continuing work on this exporter.

New Community Add-ons

The community is busy as ever, and there are a couple of notable new add-ons in CVS which you may like to check out:

  • GOOF (Game Object Oriented Framework) is a game-focussed framework on top of OGRE, pulling in a bunch of useful features and providing editor support
  • Google Sketchup Exporter – export your creations from Google Sketchup (or indeed Sketchup Pro) for use with Ogre

Enjoy!

OGRE 1.2.1 [Dagon] Released!

{mosimage}It's been a month since the first official, final release of OGRE 1.2, so it's time for a maintenance release, getting out all the bugfixes we've been collecting over the last few weeks. Mostly they are small, quite specific or fairly niche items, since the 1.2.0 release proved to be pretty stable, as we'd hoped having done 2 release candidates.

Still, nothing is ever perfect so we'll continue to ship maintenance releases as and when required in parallel to new development effort. As ever, changes to the stable branch are non-interface breaking so you can upgrade from other versions on the stable branch easily. A full rundown of all the fixes contained in this release can be found by expanding the full detail of this post. Happy downloading!
