OGRE based game wins Best Indie Game at AGDC

Some good news from down under! Primed Games have won the Best Indie Game award at the Australian Game Developers Conference with their Mario-kart inspired title ‘Scootarama’, which is based on OGRE, ODE, RakNet and FMod. It’s especially impressive considering they only had 12 weeks to come up with it with a 10-man team.

To see more about this project you can view the Alpha Demo Screenshots thread and the Award Annoucement Thread. We’ll be putting them in our ‘Featured Projects’ area once we have some screenshots from the final version, after the team has recovered from all the partying 🙂

Congratulations to Primed Games who have not only earned themselves serious kudos, but have helped spread the word about the benefits of using OGRE to industry figures down under.

Use of CVS

There are lots of changes going on in CVS HEAD right now, and some people are reporting transient problems with one platform or other. This is to be expected, since CVS HEAD is undergoing rapid change as we start developing the new features for the next release. I thought it would be appropriate if I issued some guidance on which versions you should use, depending on what you’re looking for:

  • If you’re looking for an easy life, download the Stable release from the downloads area, which is currently 0.15.0.
  • If you want a stable API, but you’d like to pick up the latest bug fixes, use CVS but access the ‘Hastur’ branch, which is the codename for the 0.15 branch. APIs will stay fixed all the way through the 0.15.x releases, and bugfixes will always be applied to this branch first. You access the Hastur branch by using ‘cvs up -Pd -r Hastur’ in ogrenew. You can even do this from a stable snapshot download if you want to upgrade it.
  • If you want to live on the edge, use CVS HEAD. Be aware that this may have transient issues, not least because anonymous CVS is only updated every 24 hours, so if we fix a temporary issue it might not appear in your version until up to a day later. This is our development version, so be aware that especially at this stage in the cycle (just after a stable release) the development branch is undergoing heavy modification – use at your own risk.

I hope that’s pretty straight forward, ask in the Forums if not.

‘Octopus’ preview release

A news item from the Yake project (a game engine using Ogre for rendering), mj and Simba have released a preview of the Octopus 3D Studio plugin which allows complex scene exporting to Yake/Ogre including meshes, collision bounds, and physics links. More information can be found in the Yake forums.

OGRE joins SoftImage|XSI 4.0 Developer Program

The OGRE team are very pleased to announce a partnership with SoftImage, which has enabled the OGRE team to join the developer program for SoftImage|XSI 4.0. Thanks to this partnership, we will be developing an XSI v4.0 exporter over the coming months, and this has been added to the Roadmap for 1.0.0 (although early versions are likely to be available for separate download before then).

The OGRE team would like to extend their thanks to SoftImage for their support. Further announcements will be made as the exporter progresses.
