Roadmap updated, DevMaster.net reviews

In case you haven’t looked recently, I wanted to point out that we’ve updated the Roadmap so you can see where we’re going for the fabled version 1.0.0.

In other news, I noticed that OGRE is still ranked as the #1 open-source engine (based on user reviews) in the engine list at DevMaster.net, which is excellent. I’d just like to say thanks to all the users who have posted positive feedback there (and to encourage any other users to do so, if they like :). We’re very keen to continue to improve OGRE in ways which benefit your projects, so we do like to hear your views – discussion about the things you like or dislike about Ogre in the forums is always welcome.

Add-on Projects Listed

For a while now, the ogreaddons CVS module has been used to store community projects which the Ogre team don’t support, but which the community collaborates on for use in their own and others Ogre-based projects. This has been discussed an awful lot in the forums, but I’ve been aware that new users might now know it exists, or what it contains, so I finally got around to putting up a list.

There’s a link in the menu on the left hand side now, called ‘Add-on Projects‘.

Ogre 0.15.0 Precompiled Demos and DirectX 9.0c

Please note that if you download the 0.15.0 precompiled demos and want to run them using DirectX9, you will have to make sure you have the latest DirectX runtime (9.0c). That’s because the demos have been built against the very latest SDK version, and if you try to run them on a machine with a previous version of DirectX, you will get an error.

You can download the latest version of the DirectX runtime from the Microsoft DirectX page.

OGRE 0.15.0 [Hastur] Released!

We’ve just released a brand new stable version of OGRE, 0.15.0. The features in this release are far too numerous to fit in a news posting, so please read the full changelog for details. As usual, to obtain the new release, proceed directly to the Downloads Section. The source, demos and tools areas have been updated, so be sure to check them all out. No pushing please. 🙂

You might notice the ‘Hastur’ moniker we’ve given this release branch. We’ve always run stable branches separately from the development branch, but to make it easier (and a little more fun), we’re going to give each branch a name from now on. The 0.15.x branch is known as ‘Hastur‘; the development branch which will eventually become 1.0 (the next planned stable release) is known as ‘Azathoth‘.

0.15 imminent

The next stable version of Ogre, to be dubbed ‘0.15’, will be arriving in a few days. We’re in the process of testing the final patches which will make it into the release, so if you’re using CVS now, you can help us out by doing some additional testing of your own. Lots of things have been added, polished and buffed up since the 0.14.x release; full details will be available on release but we’re talking things like GLSL support, better reflection handling, more shader parameter mapping options, and lots more.

It’s worth noting that this will be the last release which will include the internal GUI classes (that means the the interactive elements like buttons, scroll bars etc, not static overlays which will remain available). The next major release of Ogre (the big 1.0) will, among other things, come with a Crazy Eddies Gui example instead. I recommend all Ogre users to begin migrating to CEGui as soon as possible – it’s a truly excellent GUI library.

Particle Editor alpha release

SpannerMan and Mac have made an alpha release of their Particle Editor, and having used it I have to say it’s very slick. Check out a screenshot and/or download the demo by clicking on the link.

The demo is Windows only, but the editor is implemented completely within Ogre, using CrazyEddie’s GUI so I’m sure it will also run on Linux & OSX when the team release a more complete version.
