New Material Screenshots

I’ve created a new screenshots album to contain screenshots from the new material framework which is now in the final stages; we hope to get the 0.13 release out containing this by the end of the month. I’ve uploaded one screenshot to get it started, of a cel shading effect on the OGRE head. If you want to try out the new material framework, grab the CVS version and get playing!

Community news

Just a quick update on things that are going on in the community, incase you don’t keep up through the forums or on irc:

  • wolfman8k released a movie of the upcoming new version of DIE, he’s made some improvements to the rigging of the car so the physics are even more realistic, and his new race level looks a lot of fun. Get the movie” – note, you need a recent version of DivX.
  • Spoke’s PagingLandscape is proceeding apace, and he’s been joined by nfz. In addition, Antiarc wrote a NURBS patch data loader for it which looks intriguing. This is one to watch, you can get a work-in-progress from CVS under the ogreaddons module (a snapshot is also available in the downloads area).
  • AmitMathew, bad_camel and psyclonist are each working on game frameworks utlitising Ogre, and there is a lot of collaboration and peer review going on in the forums on the approaches they’re taking. AmitMathews is available in ogreaddons/mage, bad_camel’s is available on the CVS server for badcamelgaming.sourceforge.net

    and psyclonists is at drifter.horza.de
  • POP started up the Open Game Network which aims to promote the use of open source software in games, which we of course support.
  • Lots more, if I forgot you, email me 🙂

In short – busy times!

It’s been long overdue, but I finally got around to registering our own domain name. We’ll still be hosted on Sourceforge so the old address will continue to work, but please start updating your bookmarks / favorites to point at www.ogre3d.org.

0.12.2 Released

We’ve just released patch 2 for the Ogre 0.12 release. We now maintain the branch of the last major release separately from new development so people can take advantage of bugfixes and minor enhancements while still remaining on the stable release. You can get it from the Downloads page as per usual. Full details of the changes in this release are available in the full text of this article.

Mac OS X Build Setup

The Mac OS X build setup, using XCode, has been put into CVS. Much thanks to jder and tcleu for their efforts in getting the original work together. Expect more mac improvements in the future.

New material framework draws near

The new material framework for 0.13 is approaching completion; this version does not simply introduce the binding of vertex and fragment programs to the pipeline, it adds a whole new level of flexibility to the use of materials in OGRE. People have been asking for ‘shader’ support for some time, but we’ve waited until we had enough time to do it properly, to give people a fully rounded framework in which to use them rather than just tacking them on. We hope you approve..
