‘ogreaddons’ module launched

Over the past few months, many add-on and tool projects have been springing up, some of which have been maintained outside OGRE on either their own websites or personal pages. This has worked fairly well, but as these projects become more numerous and more interesting, we saw the merit in trying to bring them onboard more to promote their development.

Eru joins the team!

Eru, the author of the Water and CubeMapping demos, has officially joined the team. He’ll be continuing to work on demos that show off the engine more than the few tests we’ve managed to sling together! 😉 He’s already impressed us with what he can do with OGRE, and I for one can’t wait to see what he does next. 🙂 Welcome eru!

Exporters 0.11.1 update

I’ve just updated the precompiled exporters download, because we discovered in the forums that the STLport dll was missing from the zip, which was a problem for some users of the Milkshape exporter. This has now been fixed, you should copy the stlport_vc745.dll into your Milkshape or System32 folder from the archive. You can get it from the exporters download area.

We’re edging nearer to another release – the mesh / geometry / vertex buffer changes we’ve been making ballooned a little into a complete review of the underlying geometry structures, which is a good thing (since geometry data is the oldest part of the engine for obvious reasons) but was somewhat time consuming. The good news is we’re regularly seeing 50% speed improvements on the demos with the new geometry management, so that’s gotta be worth the effort.

More community news

Just a quick update about a couple of recent projects using or extending the OGRE engine:

  • Ogre4J – A Java interface to OGRE. This has been going for a little while now, but has been heinously omitted from our previous community announcements; sorry macross!

  • Spannerworx – An online team based mainly in the UK (hurrah! 😉 who are basing their first game Critical Supply on OGRE.

As always, we wish both projects unmitigated, world-dominating success! Well, we would, wouldn’t we…
