Updated Maya exporter, upcoming new 3DS Max tool

{mosimage}Good news, bisco has kindly released a new version of the Maya exporters (for 6.5, 7 and 8), which you can get from the Tools download area. The main changes in this version are listed in the full detail of this post. Big thanks as usual go to bisco for continuing to provide support and updates for the exporter.

In other exporter-related news, there will be a new exporter for 3DS Max appearing in CVS very soon. Called LEXIExporter, it's a native plugin rather than the Maxscript exporter we've provided in the past and over time and we hope should be much more artist-friendly, being as it it developed by the guys at ITE.dk (responsible for the Agent Hugo game posted in the Showcase forum a little while back) in close partnership with their art team. Again, we're very grateful to them for investing considerable time in improving the suite of tools for Ogre.

There have been an awful lot of exciting announcements in the community lately, new projects being shown off and products going gold all over the place – it's been a while since my last 'community update' to highlight these but rest assured, I'll be gathering together a wrap-up of the goings on soon.

OGRE 1.2.4 [Dagon] Released!

{mosimage}Yes, it's that time again for another maintenance release for those using the stable Dagon (OGRE v1.2) branch. You can find the detailed changelog in the complete version of this post, apart from the usual source updates users of Softimage XSI v5.x should note that an updated exporter is available. Head over to the Downloads Area to grab the new version.

We'll carry on doing these bugfixing releases until the official release of the next major stable branch (Eihort, OGRE v1.4) which is still scheduled for the end of the year. As usual, if you're an experienced developer we encourage you to try out the CVS version (although probably not for production use unless you're feeling brave) if you want to see what you'll be getting, although not officially stable or finished yet it's generally very usable.

Community updates – Tools!

Once again I’m going to cherry-pick a few items from our ever-active community to highlight here on the news page, and this time I’m concentrating on the tools landscape. Many people have seen the opportunity to take advantage of Ogre’s tightly defined scope and integration friendliness, to combine it with other libraries and their own code to create a range of tools. Here’s a quick summary list of those that have emerged or have had updates in the last couple of months, either for Ogre or just using Ogre:

This is just a selection of the tools that are coming out of the community, be sure to browse the forums to keep an eye on the full range of activity out there. Also remember to check the Addons Forum for discussions about the many add-on libraries you can use with Ogre.

Ankh – Heart of Osiris goes gold

{mosimage}Deck 13 have announced that their new OGRE-based title, Ankh – Heart of Osiris, has now gone gold! Ankh – Heart of Osiris is the follow-on to Deck 13’s award-winning adventure game Ankh which was released early this year. Deck 13 are also working on another title using OGRE, Jack Keane, due for release in 2007.

We’d like to say congratulations to all at Deck 13 for their fine work.
